o you fight with the sword, spear, axe, staff, mace or other medieval weapon? Feel free to join in for our Boffer Tournament. This page covers the rules of engagement.

Tourney Matches
Fighters will be randomly matched as pairs for each round. The first fighter in each match to receive five hits will be eliminated. The winner will continue on to the next round until only one fighter remains.

Weapons
Boffer style weapons will be used. This includes most weapons constructed of PVC pipe or similar strength plastic and covered with foam padding. A small selection of boffer weapons will be available for those who do not have their own.
Any fighters bringing their own weapon will need to have them inspected by the tourney judge for safety. Weapons deemed unsafe, including large weapons with too much flex or whip, will not be allowed. Swords and most other melee weapons will be allowed, but no ranged or throwing weapons, ropes or chains. Unrealistically large weapons such as “manga swords” will not be allowed. Weapons built to SCA, FALO, NERO or Dagorhir specifications should pass. If you have concerns about your weapon please contact Lance or seek out a judge when you first arrive at the fair.

Shields
Shields are permitted and should be well padded on the face and along the edges. Shield bashing will not count as a hit.

Fighters must sign in a half an hour before the tournament.
Safety
Fighters should follow common sense and the directions of the Judge and Man at Arms during the competition. The entire body with the exception of the head is a valid target. To discourage strong blows “slights” or slight hits will count. The following are not allowed:
Unarmed blows (punches, kicks, elbows, head butts etc.)
Tossing, flipping or throwing your opponent.
Blows to the head.
Forcing your opponent out of the ring.
Drinking alcohol during or before the match.
Real weaponry is not allowed on the fighting field, even if it is just part of your costume and peace tied.

Sportsmanship
The Judge and Man at Arms have the right to warn or disqualify any fighter for poor sportsmanship such as cheating, rhino hiding (refusing to acknowledge hits) or repeated strikes to the head. Fighters repeatedly hitting excessively hard will be warned on the first occurrence and disqualified on the second.

Chalking
Chalking weapons (in order to show hits) is allowed and encouraged. Regular blackboard chalk works fine. However, no colored chalk is allowed as it may stain garb on a good hit.

Clothing
Medieval, fantasy, renaissance and pirate garb is all highly encouraged. Metal pieces that may take a chunk out of a sword, such as clan pin, should be taken off before combat.

Registration
There is a limited number of spaces this year so please register as early as possible.
