Characters

Chances are you know nothing about being in a supernatural battle. You probably can't tell a broadsword from a dirk or an athame from a gris-gris. That is fine. That is why we have characters.
Characters give you the skills in game that you don't have in real life. It doesn't matter if you don't know the first thing about real witchcraft; if you want to be a witch your character allows you to do this by providing you with game skills. Fighting, spells, some research and many other things are accomplished in this game by using skills.
Making a character is easy. When you send in the form to sign up for Egregore you choose a game name and two professions. The game name is what you will be called in game. It's not a good idea to use your real name in game, it makes it too easy for people to track you down and interrupt your real life (whatever that is). Your professions (also called classes) give you several things, which will be explained below.
To pick your professions just look at the list of professions and pick two that appeal to you. If after playing the game you find that you don't like your character you can always retire it and start a new one. There is no wrong choice. What professions should I pick?
Now look at your professions and see what they do for you:

  • Requirements: You must fulfill all requirements to take a profession. These are usually pretty simple and are meant to prevent impossible choices such as being clergy and a necromancer at the same time.
  • Starting Skills: These are the skills that you will start with. They stack, so if both professions give you the same skill add their ranks together.
  • Advanced Skills: As you gain ether in the game you can spend it to increase your old skills and buy new skills. You can spend ether on any skills on these lists.
  • Gaining Ether: There are many ways in game to gain ether. Your professions will each give you an additional way to gain ether. Pay attention to these as this is what you will be doing a lot in the game. As an example, don't take a class that gives ether for getting into combat if you don't want to fight.

Punch & Willpower
In addition to skills gained from classes, all characters start with punch: 1 and willpower: 1. These are things that everyone can do.

Multiple Characters
Nobody is allowed to have more than one character active in Egregore. Anyone caught trying to sneak around this rule will be thrown out of the game for life without warning and publicly ridiculed by small children.

Retiring Characters
You might get bored of your character or just decide it was a poor choice for you. At any time you may email the judge and let him know that you are retiring your character. The character is immediately erased from the game and all of his items and ether disappear. You may not bring a character out of retirement, but you may now start up a brand new character.

Plot Characters
You may occasionally run into people playing plot characters. These are special characters handed out by the judge to keep the storyline going. Plot characters often have special skills and abilities not available to normal characters. They also may be permanently killed, unlike normal characters. Claiming to be a plot character when you are not is grounds for discipline. When the judge needs plot characters, usually at the start of a season, he will announce it on the Facebook page and anyone can volunteer, although the judge will choose whomever he wants.
